What size rug under a dining table

Updated September 8, 2026

A dining table on a rug wide enough that the pulled-out chairs stay on it

A dining rug is sized by the chairs, not by the table. The test is whether a chair stays on the rug when someone pushes it back to stand up, because a chair leg that drops off the edge catches, tips and drags at the rug binding.

The store's rule is 24 to 36 inches of rug past the table edge on every side. Twenty-four inches covers a chair pulled out far enough to sit down. Thirty-six covers it pulled out far enough to stand up and walk away.

The arithmetic

Add twice the clearance to each dimension of the table.

Table Table size Rug at 24 in clearance Practical size
4 seat 36 x 48 in 84 x 96 in 8 x 10
6 seat 40 x 72 in 88 x 120 in 9 x 12
8 seat 44 x 96 in 92 x 144 in 10 x 14

A 9 x 12 under a standard six seat table is the common answer, and it leaves 34 inches at the sides and 36 at the ends, which is inside the band at the generous end.

An 8 x 10 under that same six seat table leaves 28 inches at the sides and only 12 at the ends, so the chairs at the head and foot come off the rug. That is the case for going up a size rather than across.

The rules, in four lines

  1. 24 to 36 inches of rug past the table on every side. Twenty-four covers a chair pulled out to sit down, thirty-six covers it pulled out to stand up and walk away.
  2. Every chair leg stays on the rug when the chair is pulled out. This is the test the whole size follows from.
  3. Size for the table extended, if it has a leaf you use.
  4. Flat, low pile. Chairs have to slide, and crumbs have to come out.

Will a 5 x 7 rug fit under a dining table? Under a four-seat table only, and it is tight: a 5 x 7 is 60 by 84 inches, and a 36 by 48 inch table leaves 12 inches at the sides and 18 at the ends. Both are under the 24 inch minimum, so the chairs come off the back edge as soon as anyone stands. For a table of any size above a small square four-seater, no.

What size rug for a 6 seat dining table? A 9 x 12. A standard six-seat table is about 40 by 72 inches, so a 9 x 12 leaves 34 inches at the sides and 36 at the ends, comfortably inside the band.

What size rug for a 4 seat table? An 8 x 10 for a 36 by 48 inch table, which gives 30 inches all round. A 6 x 9 works for a small square four-seater and is the smallest that should be considered.

What size rug for an 8 seat table? A 10 x 14. An eight-seat table runs about 44 by 96 inches, and a 10 x 14 leaves 38 inches at the sides and 36 at the ends.

Round tables

A round table takes a round rug or a rectangle, and the measurement is the same: diameter plus 48 to 72 inches.

  • A 48 in round table wants a rug of about 8 ft across.
  • A 60 in round table wants about 9 ft.

A round rug under a round table repeats the shape and keeps the clearance equal all the way round, which a rectangle cannot do.

The room, and the leaf

Leave 18 to 24 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls, so a 9 x 12 wants a room of roughly 12 by 15 feet.

If the table extends, size for it extended. A table that lives at 72 inches and goes to 96 with a leaf in is a table whose chairs come off the rug at every dinner where the rug matters most.

Which rug to put there

A dining rug takes the worst wear in the house: chair legs dragging in two directions, and food.

  • Flat and low pile. It lets a chair slide instead of catching, and crumbs vacuum out instead of settling in.
  • Polypropylene or a flat cotton weave over anything deep. Wool works and is harder to clean at the point where someone drops a plate.
  • Washable is worth paying for here more than in any other room.
  • Skip shag, skip high pile, and skip viscose, which marks with water.

Whether to use one at all

A dining rug takes the worst wear in the house: chair legs dragging in two directions, and food. Flat, low pile is what survives it, and it is also what lets a chair slide rather than catch. Deep pile under a dining table fights the chairs and holds crumbs.

If the room is where meals actually happen every day, a rug that can be cleaned easily matters more than the exact size.
