What size rug for a queen bed

A standard queen bed is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It is 16 inches narrower than a king, and that difference moves the answer down a whole rug size.
The rule this store uses is 18 to 24 inches of rug past the bed on three sides. Eighteen inches is about one step out of bed.
The arithmetic, size by size
A queen is 60 inches across, so the rug needs 60 inches plus twice the clearance.

An 8 x 10 is the answer for most queen bedrooms. Eighteen inches each side is the measurement the rule is built on, and it is the reason this size is the one people are usually pointed to. The 120 inch length leaves 40 inches past the foot of an 80 inch bed once the rug is set a foot off the headboard wall.
A 9 x 12 gives 24 inches, the generous end of the band. It suits a bedroom of 13 feet or wider, where an 8 x 10 starts to look marooned in the middle of the floor.

Is an 8 x 10 too big for a queen bed? No. Eighteen inches each side is the measurement the rule is built on, and a room of about 11 by 13 feet carries it comfortably. It looks large leaning against a wall in a shop and correct once the bed is on it.
Is a 6 x 9 too small for a queen? To surround it, yes, at six inches each side. Turned and slid down under the lower two thirds of the bed it does the job the rug is there for, which is rug where your feet land.
Is a 5 x 7 too small for a queen? Under the bed, yes. A 5 x 7 is 60 inches wide, exactly the width of the mattress, so it would disappear entirely underneath. It belongs beside the bed rather than under it.
8 x 10 or 9 x 12? Measure the room. Under about 13 feet wide, the 8 x 10. Over it, the 9 x 12, because an 8 x 10 in a large room starts to look marooned.
The three placements, in short
Which one you use is decided by the room, not the bed.
- Full surround. The rug runs under the whole bed and out past it on three sides. An 8 x 10, or a 9 x 12 in a larger room.
- Lower two thirds. The rug starts below the nightstands and extends past the foot, so feet land on rug and the nightstands sit on bare floor. This is what makes a 6 x 9 work.
- Runners down the sides. One each side, covering only the floor you stand on.

What the room has to be
Leave about 18 inches of bare floor outside the rug on each side.
- An 8 x 10 wants a bedroom of roughly 11 by 13 feet.
- A 9 x 12 wants roughly 12 by 15 feet.
A queen in a room narrower than 11 feet is the case for the placement below.
The 6 x 9, placed under the lower two thirds
A 6 x 9 leaves 6 inches each side of a queen, so it cannot surround the bed. Turn it and it becomes useful.
Set the rug across the room and slide it down so it starts below the nightstands. It runs under the mattress from about knee height and extends past the foot. Your feet land on rug getting out of bed, the nightstands sit on bare floor, and more of the floor stays visible, which makes a small bedroom read larger.
This is the placement for a bedroom under 11 feet wide.
Two runners instead
A runner down each side of the bed covers the floor you stand on and leaves the middle of the room open. It works where a large rug would run into a doorway or a closet swing.
Use 2 x 6 or larger, set 4 to 6 inches out from the bed frame.
Full and twin beds
- A full is 54 by 75 inches. An 8 x 10 leaves 21 inches each side, comfortably inside the band, and a 6 x 9 leaves 9 inches, which is the two thirds placement again.
- A twin is 38 by 75 inches. A 5 x 8 leaves 11 inches each side and works best pushed to one side of the bed rather than centered under it, since a twin usually sits against a wall.
